But that world turns out to be as compelling as the circumstances under which the film came to be made. Castaing-Taylor captures the beauty and unforgiving ruggedness of the landscape, and also the slow, difficult rhythms of the drive and its daily grinding work, punctuated by strange incidents and sudden crises. The film begins at the Montana ranch where we see the sheep get fed, sheared and the next generation are brought into this world. While Barbash filmed in Big Timber, Montana, where the Allestad spread is located, Castaing-Taylor, riding and hiking with camera gear in tow, followed the men and animals into the mountains, where he was charged by grizzly bears — and he came down 20 pounds lighter and in need of double foot surgery. In Big Timber, the film discovers the seasonal work-a-day world of sheep ranching. The Gallatin National Forest, where Sweetgrass was filmed over several summers, is spectacular for its remoteness, its variety of wildlife, and the granite cordillera of the Rockies.

The title derives from Sweet Grass Countyone of several in which the film was shot. Since then it has regularly screened worldwide and distributed theatrically by Cinema Guild. But after the Fourth of July, when rodeos, dog trials, shooting competitions and haying contests break out all over Sweet Grass County, the hard and lonely work of an old-time drive into the mountains begins in earnest for hired hands Ahern and Connolly.

It is a jewel of a movie and definitely worth the time if you have a chance to see it. The last Old West sheep drive — a family’s hundred-year tradition of work — comes to a simple conclusion, with only a hint of nostalgia.

Nevertheless, the lengthy and recurring wide-eyed-wonder shots of the alpine landscape are excessive and interrupt the narrative flow, bringing Sweetgrass to a ponderous minutes. For most audiences, the documentary is mmovie eye-opening account of ranching, as it obviously was for British-born Castaing-Taylor, who accompanied the ranchers and shot the film.

Raising sheep remains an intense, hands-on business. Lucien Castaing-Taylor, Verena Paravel. Everything is done with the kind of restraint that is both the ideal complement to a mkvie physical setting and a fitting tribute to this disappearing way of life. But when some of the sheep, in a tight spot, simply go over a cliff, it’s difficult not to sympathize with the exasperated herders.

Sweetgrass offers an unprecedented record of a cowboy way of life at the moment of its disappearance, and a magnificently filmed portrait of a world in which nature and culture, animals and humans are on intimate terms — and sometimes violently at odds. I already used my “not baaaad” review on Shaun the Sheep, so I’ll just say that Sweetgrass was mesmerizing.
