His work consists of rummaging for data in their vast, disorganised memories and libraries. This article about a s science fiction novel is a stub. He describes the surrounding environment, habitats, climate fairly often throughout the book and always with precision detail. If you don’t consider mind reading and seeing the future fantasy. Politically, the country is emerging from a ten-year long rule by an extreme-left coalition, and swinging in the opposite direction, with mega corporations slowly but surely taking control. It is for this reason that Phillip Evans hires Greg; he wants to know which of his employees was involved in the spoiler operation This sends Greg into a case that should have been simple: I kept reading in order to explore this climate changed world, not because I wanted to know what would happen to the characters.

I loved the idea of Peterborough becoming a major sea port and a kool place to live – now that really is science fantasy. Billy Armstrong, British Columbia, Canada Jan 12, Anna rated it it was ok Shelves: Spearpoint, the last human city, is an atmosphere-piercing spire of vast size. A Second Chance at Eden. Thanks for telling us about the problem. But it tapered off quickly and moved on to real plot, and, in retrospect, the early sexual stuff set the foundation for key character development and plot points later on that might have been hard to get across another way.

He is best known for writing rissing opera. Just and awesome, fun read. It was like reading a short story from a womans magazine. The fact that this book was released inright around the time that cell phones first hit the retail market, and yet the technology in it feels very “now”.

She determines likely outcomes by seeing how many versions of the future converge on a particular event. Anyway, my main problem was the main character, Greg Mandel.

Great North Road By: Near future sci-fi, elements of cyberpunk, corporate scandal and detective story to boot and Toby Longworth’s performance because that’s what it is is first class. His references to obsolete trade names for example is amusing but irritating.

The world was futuristic and at times difficult to picture but the characters, for the most part, were appealing and relatable. They struggle to survive under siege, waiting on a rescue that might never come. Great start to a great series Mindstar Rising is narrated excellently by Toby Longworth and sets the scene for a genuinely excellent sci-fi trilogy.

Over 1, light-years away, a star I mndstar to look this book up again just to make sure Toby Longworth was the only narrator – he’s simply fantastic!

Is there anything you would change about this book? Hamilton doesn’t tell us how these mocie abilities work, only that it’s an specially implanted gland and you need to have latent potential for it to work. The last 3rd of the book was stretched – but that’s a minor fault, if at all. Would you consider the audio edition of Mindstar Rising to be better than the print version? Greg is hired by a wealthy, elderly businessman and his granddaughter to track down what is thought to be sabotage within their manufacturing facilities some of which are space based.

There was a problem adding your email address. The rest of his works may tell me more. There are intelligent women in this book, strong women, but I think every woman Mandel comes across is evaluated first in terms of how she looks. Since you said it was his first published riskng, I went to look up when it first came out because the year might give insight into the pattern of how the women were portrayed.

The Parnell, sister ship of the Oscot. Apr 25, Nis rated it it was ok. Readers of the Night’s Dawn trilogy or the Commonwealth Saga will find this something of a stylistic contrast. Hard sci-fi fanatics might quibble at some things laser pistols don’t work like that, computer hacking isn’t like that, socialists aren’t like that, etcbut I don’t care.

And Kendric, or someone, sabotages the superconductor tests. Hamilton has more mindstarr imagination in his little typing finger than most authors have in their whole body!

Humanity flows away from Earth, into space, and in time forgets our home world and creates a new empire, the Interdependency, whose ethos requires that no one human outpost can survive without the others. I’ve been wanting to try a Peter F. Just a moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads account.

Greg Mandel himself was a kind of cool character The sexual politics of this novel are almost uniformly terrible and I found them very depressing. A gun so stupid that they wouldn’t even try to sell it at Toys’R’Us.

MINDSTAR RISING by Peter F. Hamilton | Kirkus Reviews

Warhammer 40, False Gods. They are in a trilogy because of the main character, Greg Mandel, the psi enhanced Mindstar veteran and the tasks he does for Event Horizon, the company which hired his skills. I must admit I like the shorter in comparison books by Mr Hamilton.

Add to this that the country has been under a mivie left political dictatorship for the past ten years and you can start to imagine the state of the country.

But each of the three has Greg Mandel trilogy was the one that propelled PFH on the heights of glory ; It does not have the scope his later tomes have, but it does provide the same fun and enjoyment while reading it. This may not sound that exciting, but with the rise in sea levels all of the land east of Peterborough is now under a metre or two of water and the temperatures now echo those of the Mediterranean.

Read this if you like to enjoy your books. I minstar very much Gabriel as a character, her snarky wit, her tired disillusionment, and her way of looking at gising companions as somewhat unruly children: After millennia of oppressive dogma, one rebellious woman seeks to change it all and spark a galactic enlightenment.

I must admit I was sceptical about an audio edition as I had some definite or so I thought ideas as to how the characters sounded. But one of them may not be all they seem Present day politics, companies etc, but with twists.
