Fire Island

Fire Island - Homepage - General Info

Fire Island is a New York barrier island of approximately 30 miles (48 km) long and 0.5 miles (1 km) wide, located in Suffolk County on the southern side of Long Island, with numerous restaurants, bars, shops, attractions and more, but with a singularity: cars are not allowed anywhere on the island.

Fire Island

Ocean Beach is one of the Fire Island’s largest communities within the island, unofficially known as the “Capital of Fire Island.”, while West Fire Island is a smaller island in the Great South Bay north of Fire Island with just five houses, and East Fire Island is larger than West Fire Island, but uninhabited. Long Island is separated from the island by the Great South Bay, a 5-miles wide natural harbor formed by Fire Island.

The National Seashore encompasses several towns, including Ocean Beach, Point o' Woods, Robert Moses State Park, Robins Rest, Sailors Haven, Saltaire, Seaview, Smith Point, Sunken Forest, Water Island, Watch Hill, Atlantique, Cherry Grove, Corneille Estates, Davis Park, Dunewood, Fair Harbor, Fire Island Pines, Fire Island Summer Club, Kismet, Lonelyville, and Ocean Bay Park.

Point o' Woods, is the oldest community on Fire Island, offering diverse recreation facilities including tennis courts, camps, fields, ferry line and the only Fire Island’s train track. This self contained town has a massive 15-feet high fence bordering Ocean Bay Park to the west as an imposing barricade, that requires a key and is not advisable the attempt to scale.

Kismet, is the water most Fire Island's hub with a quaint country-like atmosphere, a vibrant nightlife and two popular bayside restaurants, as well as a popular food market. From this point, Robert Moses Beach is just a 15-minute walk away. The Island Ferry Service offers service between Bay Shore Fire Island Ferry terminal and Kismet.

Fire Island

Atlantique is the narrowest part of Fire Island comprising a 50-homes community, difficult to access due to there is no sidewalks but connected through the Atlantique Town marina from Bay Shore Fire Island ferry terminal. This town features a great sandy beach for hiking. Residents are friendly and the atmosphere of this Fire Island's town is family-oriented.

Fire Island

Corneille Estates is located to the west of Ocean Beach, scenery for ABC reality show filmed in the summer of 2006. This beautiful community is considered the single's favorite destination, with a small popular beach, winding boardwalks, lush wooded areas, and a ferry service connecting from Bay Shore Fire Island ferry terminal to Ocean Beach.

And when it comes to talk about Fire Island's "capital", Ocean Beach is the town with the greatest concentration of households, attractions and recreational areas. However, Ocean Beach is also famous as the "Land of No", starting with no cars and ending with no eating ice cream on Main Street. Although seeming absurd, such regulations help to maintain safety and control over the influx of tourists.

However, visitors must not be discouraged by such regulations, Fire Island is open to all public and visitors are more than welcome to enjoy its beaches with lifeguards on duty at Watch Hill and Sailors Haven from late June through Labor Day. The public law of September 11, 1964 states that:

"Fire Island National Seashore was established for the purpose of conserving and preserving for the use of future generations certain relatively unspoiled and undeveloped beaches, dunes, and other natural features ... which possess high values to the Nation as examples of unspoiled areas of great natural beauty in close proximity to large concentrations of urban population"

Fire Island

Thanks to this law, Fire Island offers visitors pristine ocean shores, an ancient unspoiled maritime forest, as well as natural, cultural and recreational resources, including the historic estate of William Floyd and legacies of lighthouse keepers, just one hour east of New York city, offering sightseeing, bird watching, backpacking, hiking, and overall wildlife-viewing on nature trails along the seashore.

For relaxation, the National Fire IslandSeashore features a campground and backcountry camping in a wilderness area, with fishing, boating, and canoeing in Great South Bay, along salt marshes between Watch Hill and Smith Point. Fire Island is one of the few spots where people have the opportunity to leave their cars behind and enjoy miles of boardwalks and trails.

Fire Island

Fire Island is one of the world's longest chains of barrier islands with predominant indigenous vegetation of beach grass, wax myrtle, bayberry, pitch pine, shadbush, and common greenbrier. Geologically, Fire Island grades from salt marshes to primary dunes along the seashore, typical of most barrier islands from the Atlantic to the Gulf coast.

On average, there are 10% forested terrestrial habitats, 40% wetlands, 25% open (including beach and fields), 25% developed either by the National Park Service or the 17 local communities on the island, and the submerged portion of Fire Island is distributed between Great South Bay (80%) and the Atlantic Ocean (20%).
